Vista Health Systems is a community based hospital that offers a wide variety of services located in Waukegan, IL. Starting in 2014, I have been able to work with and shadow several dietitians including Sherri O'Shea MS, RDN, LDN, Karen Giese, MS, RDN, CDE, Debbie Regnier RD, LDN, and Kelly Apfel MS, RDN, CDE. One of my first projects for the dietitian team was to organize their educational materials they gave to patients. I organized the handouts by diseases within the body and their nutrition care. This organizational system is still in place today.
One of the major projects I had was to create educational materials to give to various patient populations. The summer of 2014 I created handouts for the diabetes population. The handouts I made include a "MyPlate" for diabetes, a tips and tricks guide for portion control, how to read nutrition labels, identifying carbohydrate content and carbohydrate counting, and a list of food servings and if those foods will raise blood glucose. The project enabled me to utilize my Spanish minor by translating the documents to Spanish to reach a wider range of patients. The Certified Diabetes Educator is still utilizing these handouts. In addition, I also had the opportunity to re-develop and re-design some educational handouts for the oncology population at Vista.
I assisted on patient rounding and observed one-on-one consultations for people with diabetes and weight management issues. I also aided in scheduling appointments for private outpatient diabetes consultations for Karen Giese, and had the opportunity to observe proper billing and coding procedures.
